Saturday, June 28 @ 8 pm: Yiddishkayt LA Presents Comic Strip Jews: Cartoons from the Yiddish PressLecture and Slide Show with Historian Eddy PortnoyDon't miss this entertaining and insightful slide presentation with noted Historian, Eddy Portnoy.  Join us as we explore the unique history of Yiddish cartooning. Thousands of cartoons appeared in the Yiddish press where Yiddish cartoonists held a mirror up to Jewish society in an attempt to expose hypocrisy and wrongdoing. Most interestingly, they mined traditional Jewish texts and customs to create uniquely Jewish cartoons. Please RSVP to (213) 389-8880 or by email. Suggested contribution of $5, reception to follow.       Eddy Portnoy holds a PhD in Modern Jewish Studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary and a Masters degree in Yiddish from Columbia University.  A regular contributor to the Forward, he has published articles in Polin, The Drama Review and the International Journal of Comic Art.

      Sunday, June 29 @ 7 pm: Cuban Film Series: Amada. In 1914 Havana, Amada, privileged but unhappily married, falls in love with her cousin Marcial, a young idealist. Will Amada follow her passion and escape her unfaithul husband? A film by Humberto Solàs. Presented in conjunction with the Los Angeles Coalition in Solidarity with Cuba, admission by $5 donation.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of continuous public service in 2009, KPFK presents Culture Clash, the hilarious and potent satirical trio, in a benefit performance at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre, also featuring KPFK's own Pocho Hour of Power led by Lalo Alcaraz, creator of the daily comic strip "La Cucaracha."
