Cuban Film Series:
Entre Ciclones/Hurricanes
Directed by Enrique Colina, 2003. In Spanish with English subtitles. A hugely popular comedy hit in Cuba in early 2003, this is the story of Tomás, a trainee telephone repairman in Havana. Having just lost his apartment in a hurricane, Tomás is forced to move in with his girlfriend, desperate to get a telephone at any cost. Complications (and hilarity) ensue.
Presented with the LA Coalition in Solidarity with Cuba, $5 donation. Refreshments and stimulating discussion included.

Far Yugnt/For Youth:
The Yiddish Songbook of S. Polonski
Soviet Jewish composer S. Polonski contributed two or three well-known items to the Yiddish repertoire, but now an audience in Los Angeles will have the opportunity to hear his entire songbook written for Yiddish-speaking schoolchildren in the Soviet Union, published in 1931.
This performance by the Mit Gezang Yiddish Chorus of the Arbeter Ring/Workmen's Circle (Kathryn Rowe, director) and soloists including Fran Chalin, Ruthie Seid, Ruth Judkowitz, Rita Hall, and Eric Gordon, is considered a world premiere recital. The existence of such music attests to the fact that for a brief time Yiddish culture was valued as one component of the larger emerging Soviet communal life in the pre-World War II era.
Fifty-six years ago, on August 12, 1952, the Soviet régime of Joseph Stalin executed fourteen prominent Yiddish writers and Jewish communal officials in an attempt to wipe out Jewish culture. As we have done for many years, our Committee to Commemorate Soviet Yiddish Writers, a coalition of secular Jewish organizations in the Los Angeles area, gathers to commemorate these events. This unique afternoon program will be in Yiddish and English.
Admission will be free and open to the public (donations accepted). Reservations not required. Light refreshments will be served.

Call for Artists!
RU Evolved? Artists Reflect on Darwin @ 200
January 11 - February 27, 2009
February 12, 2009 will mark Charles Darwin's 200th birthday. The year 2009 also marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of his seminal work, On the Origin of Species (1859). Anticipating an outpouring of worldwide Darwin observances, we ask artists to consider the meaning of his life and work and reveal to us any suitable historical or contemporary insights. Deadline for submissions is October 24, 2008.
